Coin collecting has a long-standing tradition in Slovakia. However, one of the most significant steps that made Slovakia stand out in the field of modern numismatics is the series of collectible 5 euro coins, which combines fine art, nature conservation, cultural heritage, and education. How did this 5 euro coin project come about in Slovakia, and what preceded it?
The idea to mint thematically rich and yet accessible 5 euro coins was born at the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) around 2017. The goal was to create a coin that would not be intended for regular circulation but for collecting purposes – similar to commemorative 2-euro coins, but with more room for artistic expression and thematic diversity. It was also important to make the coins more attractive to younger collectors and the public who are not interested in expensive gold or silver issues. The brass 5 euro coin (MS63) was therefore chosen as a compromise between aesthetics and affordability.
Various factors were considered in the creation of the series of collectible 5 euro coins:
- Thematic attractiveness (nature of Slovakia, animals, Slovak culture)
- Graphic uniqueness (detailed artistic designs by professional artists)
- Education and awareness (coins as a tool for spreading knowledge)
- Accessibility (for the average collector)
The first discussions led to the creation of the series "Fauna and Flora in Slovakia," which is always based on one selected animal typical for the Slovak territory.
Each year of the commemorative 5 euro coins is the result of an anonymous art competition, where a professional committee evaluates dozens of designs. The winning design is then processed at the Kremnica Mint, which is one of the oldest continuously operating mints in the world.
1.) Honeybee (2021) Author: Zbyněk Fojtů
The first issued 5-euro coin was in 2021 with the motif of the Honeybee, which was an immediate success among collectors. The reverse side features a detailed depiction of a worker bee at work, symbolizing diligence and harmonious life in the hive.
2.) Grey Wolf (2021) Author: Karol Ličko
Wolves were once nearly exterminated in Slovakia. The Slovak 5 euro coin highlights their important role as apex predators that regulate ungulate populations. 3.) Tatra Chamois (2022) Author: Mária Poldaufová
The Tatra chamois is an endemic species found exclusively in the Tatras. The 5 euro coin depicts the chamois in its natural environment with majestic mountains in the background. The population of chamois in Slovakia is constantly monitored and protected.
4.) Eurasian Lynx (2022) Author: Karol Ličko
The lynx is a shy solitary animal that moves quietly and unnoticed. Its return to the Slovak mountains is considered a success in nature conservation. The 5 € coin captures it in dramatic motion, with an emphasis on the details of its fur and sharp gaze.
5.) Brown Bear (2023) Author: Mária Poldaufová
The bear is one of the most iconic inhabitants of Slovak forests. The collectible 5 euro coin captures the bear, symbolizing respect and balance between nature and civilization. Although it appears massive, it spends most of its time peacefully searching for food.
6.) Black Stork (2023) Author: Karol Ličko
It is a sign of unspoiled nature and a clean environment. The 5 euro coin captures the elegant flight of the bird with outstretched wings. In Slovakia, it nests deep in forests near watercourses. There are only a few hundred pairs, and their occurrence is carefully monitored.
7.) European Bison (2024) Author: Mária Poldaufová
The bison is the largest European terrestrial mammal. The brass 5 euro coin depicts it with a majestic mane and strong body as a symbol of a return to natural heritage. Currently, bison can be seen mainly in the Poloniny area.
8.) Western Capercaillie (2024) Author: Karol Ličko
The capercaillie is a symbol of virgin mountain forests. The 5 euro coin captures the male capercaillie with outstretched tail feathers in a typical mating pose. Their population is declining due to the loss of suitable habitats.
9.) Imperial Eagle (2025) Author: Tomáš Lamač
The imperial eagle is one of the rarest birds of prey in Slovakia. The 5 euro series coin captures it in flight with open wings and a piercing gaze. The eagle is considered the king of the sky and a symbol of freedom and strength.
10.) Danube Salmon (2025) Author: Tomáš Lamač
The series will soon be completed with the tenth coin, which will be dedicated to the Danube salmon – the largest salmonid fish found in Slovak rivers. This rare and endangered fish, which lives only in clean waters, symbolizes the importance of protecting the aquatic ecosystem.
The coin with its motif is set to be released in September 2025 and is already eagerly anticipated by collectors.
Due to the great success of the series, an original album "Collectible 5-euro coins – Fauna and Flora in Slovakia" was created, offering collectors a dignified place to store all issued coins. The album for Collectible 5 euro coins Fauna and Flora in Slovakia is available in two versions and is technically designed to protect the coins from damage, dust, or UV radiation. The album for collectible 5 euro coins also includes the year of issue, the name of individual species, and an overview of the entire series – making the album not only a storage but also an educational tool.
Slovakia's collectible 5-euro coins are not just pieces of metal – they are an expression of respect for nature, culture, and artistic craftsmanship. They are accessible, educational, and yet beautiful. And most importantly – thanks to them, many people are once again reflecting on what makes Slovakia unique.
