Investment Gold Coin Franz Joseph I. 1915 (re-strike), nominal value 1 Ducat Material: Au 986/1000 Diameter: 19.75 mm Weight: 3.49 g Quality: BU IMAGE FOR ILLUSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY! The ducat originates from medieval Italy and was first minted in Austria at the beginning of the 16th century. Until 1857, when they lost their status as legal tender, 1 and 4 ducat pieces were used as trade coins until 1915, the year indicated on these magnificent modern re-strikes. Although the coin's design was first minted in 1872, the year engraved on its reverse acknowledges that the economic constraints of World War I ended, at least temporarily, the minting of gold coins in 1915. The profile of Emperor Franz Joseph adorns the beautiful obverse of the coin. Minting was later resumed in unchanged form for trade purposes, and in the Viennese form, minting continues to this day. Re-strike ducats are available in nominal values of 1 or 4 ducats.
