The Bronze Medal for Bravery was introduced on February 14, 1915, by Emperor Franz Joseph I. It was primarily intended for soldiers and non-commissioned officers for acts of bravery in battle; the bronze class could also be awarded to members of allied armies. It was approximately 31 mm and made from an alloy of bronze and gunmetal. The obverse bears a portrait of Franz Joseph I facing right and the inscription "FRANZ JOSEPH I. V. G. G. KAISER V. OESTERREICH". On the reverse is "DER / TAPFERKEIT" in a decorative wreath with crossed flags.
It was one of the few decorations intended exclusively for personal courage in direct combat. The gold version was very rare, awarded only for extraordinary acts of heroism. It could also be worn by soldiers of lower ranks, which made it prestigious among rank-and-file soldiers.
