The Protected Landscape Area Little Carpathians includes predominantly preserved deciduous forests with natural species composition, located at the interface of the Carpathian and Pannonian bioregions. In the southwestern part of their territory, historical structures of the vineyard landscape have been preserved. The Little Carpathians are a core mountain range of the inner Carpathians with a diverse geological composition. There are 8 karst units and approximately 380 caves, of which only the Driny cave is accessible. Forests cover 89% of the area, with beech, oak, and ash being dominant. Among non-forest habitats, dry grasslands and rocky communities are mainly represented. The Little Carpathians are the only place in Slovakia where the horseshoe vetch (a European Mediterranean-sub-Mediterranean shrub species) naturally occurs, albeit rarely. Other species that occur in Slovakia only in the Little Carpathians include the tongue-leaved plant, gray vetch, and the inflated bladderwort. The fauna is species-rich, with the presence of the noble crayfish, the banded demoiselle, the peregrine falcon, the black stork, and the eagle owl. Caves serve as significant wintering grounds for bats.
Obverse:
On the obverse of the euro coin is a composition of elements typical for the PLA Little Carpathians with vineyards at the foothills of the mountains, over which a golden eagle flies. In the left part of the coin field is the flower of the Turk's cap lily and in the background the silhouette of the ruins of Čachtice Castle. Next to it is the mark of the Kremnica Mint, a state enterprise, consisting of the abbreviation MK placed between two dies. In the right part of the coin field is depicted a bunch of grapes as a symbol of the traditional viticulture of the Little Carpathians. At the top of the euro coin is the inscription SLOVAKIA and the year 2026, separated by the state emblem of the Slovak Republic. To the right of the year is a stylized linden trefoil changing to the letters NBS representing the abbreviation of the National Bank of Slovakia when tilted. At the bottom of the euro coin is the nominal value of 20 EURO in the description.
Reverse:
On the reverse of the euro coin is the protected landscape area with stylized Little Carpathian rocky towns and forest cover. At the top of the coin field is a flying saker falcon. On the right side of the composition are bats and an eagle owl. In the bottom part of the coin field are plant species typical for the area, a butterfly, and a lizard. In the description, at the top is the inscription PROTECTED LANDSCAPE AREA and at the bottom the inscription LITTLE CARPATHIANS. The stylized initials TL of the collector's euro coin author Tomáš Lamač, DiS., are at the left edge of the collector's euro coin.
