Seventy years ago, in 1955, the automotive world experienced a revolution with the arrival of the DS model. The DS model, presented at the Paris Motor Show, was not just a new car but a radical breakthrough compared to anything we had seen before. With its avant-garde design and technological innovations, it redefined the standards of the automotive industry and public perception.
What made the DS model such an innovative car was primarily its bold, futuristic silhouette with sleek lines and precise aerodynamics, designed by the famous Italian designer Flaminio Bertoni. It stood out from the boxy, angular shapes of post-war cars and embodied a fluid elegance that remains a model of inspiration to this day.
Besides its innovative aesthetics, the DS model also impressed with its cutting-edge technology. These innovations included hydropneumatic suspension, which allowed the vehicle to "float" on the road and smoothly absorb bumps. This suspension, combined with power steering and hydraulically controlled braking, offered a comfortable and safe driving experience. Another significant innovation was the directional headlights that followed the curves. All these features made it a true pioneer of the modern car. It combines beauty, technology, and ergonomics.
This car, which became an icon of the 50s and 60s of the 20th century, left a mark in history and remains a reference point for innovations to this day. From official use by French presidents to appearances in many films, the DS has gained legendary status.
On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of its creation, Monnaie de Paris designed a collection of coins in its honor. The series highlights the bold aesthetics and technical perfection of the DS and underscores its fundamental impact on the development of the automobile.
On the obverse of the coin are two symbolic DS models. At the top of the design is the DS 23 model, which began selling from 1975, with its characteristic avant-garde front and the last edition produced. The rotating headlights, the first in automotive history, are highlighted with selective gold plating. They seem to follow the movement of the road and illuminate the night. The model depicted at the bottom of the design is the first edition, DS 19, which began production in 1955. This model is characterized by headlights under an aerodynamic window and a more modern grille. These two versions symbolize the stylistic evolution of the DS model.
The directional headlights of the DS 23 model are highlighted with selective gold plating. In the background, there is also a selective black rhodium plating, which highlights the headlights illuminating the night.
The reverse side shows a view of the rear of the vehicle, more specifically an enlarged rear directional indicator at the top of the rear window. The red color highlights this detail.
