Chatam Sofer (24. 9. 1762 - 3. 10. 1839) was a prominent orthodox rabbi, teacher, judge, and scholar. He served in various places as a rabbi. In 1806, he accepted the position of chief rabbi of the then Pressburg (Bratislava), where he remained until his death. He is one of the greatest authorities on Jewish religious law and a representative of the fight against reforms. In this spirit, he also led the famous Bratislava yeshiva, which was one of the leading centers of traditional rabbinical education in Europe. He was also a recognized rabbinical judge. Chatam Sofer left a rich literary work, he is the author of many commentaries on the Torah and Talmud and also wrote religious poetry. He was buried in the Bratislava Jewish cemetery from the 17th century. The cemetery was liquidated in the 1940s, and only a few graves of the so-called rabbinical district, including the grave of Chatam Sofer, remained at the original site. At the end of the 1990s, a memorial - the Chatam Sofer Memorial - was established at this site, where believers from all over the world come to pray.
