The caves of the Slovak and Aggtelek Karst were inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List based on a bilateral Slovak-Hungarian nomination project in 1995. In 2000, the site was expanded to include the Dobšinská Ice Cave, located in the Slovak Paradise. The representativeness and uniqueness of the underground forms of the Slovak Karst lie mainly in the extraordinary genetic and morphological diversity of the underground spaces, the variety of their sinter fillings, and also in the unique biological and archaeological values. There are many representative types of dripstone decoration here. Unique are the three-meter-long straws in the Gombasecká Cave, and the shields or drums of the Domica Cave, as well as the aragonite crystals of the Ochtinská Aragonite Cave, which are known worldwide. In such complexity, caves in the temperate climatic zone do not occur anywhere else in the world.

Obverse:
On the obverse of the coin are depicted stalagmites from the Domica Cave, vertical stalactites and straws from the Gombasecká Cave, and at the bottom right an aragonite formation from the Ochtinská Aragonite Cave. The value and monumentality of the caves of the Slovak Karst are metaphorically characterized by an element of temple architecture – a Gothic arch. In the right part of the coin field is the state emblem of the Slovak Republic. At the bottom is the name of the state SLOVAKIA and below it is the year 2017. Above the state emblem is the denomination of the coin "10 EURO" in two lines.

Reverse:
On the reverse of the coin is depicted a dripstone formation from the Krásnohorská Cave, complemented by rare cave animals – a cave beetle, a cave cricket, and a bat. At the upper edge of the coin field is the inscription CAVES OF THE SLOVAK KARST and below it the text WORLD NATURAL HERITAGE. The mark of the Kremnica Mint MK and the stylized initials of the name and surname of the coin's design author Branislav Ronai BR are in the lower right part of the coin field.
