Among the most significant Great Moravian princes was Rastislav. During his reign (846 – 870), Great Moravia transcended the framework of a tribal principality, which had to acknowledge dependence on the Frankish and then the East Frankish Empire. Thanks to him, an independent state with full state-legal legitimacy emerged in Central Europe. Rastislav achieved the independence of his empire through successes in battles with the East Frankish Empire, alliances with other Slavs, and diplomatically, especially through cooperation with the papal curia. The emergence of a sovereign state was also significantly contributed to by the arrival of the mission of Constantine and Methodius to Great Moravia (863), which was part of Rastislav's plan to create an independent Slavic church province. Thanks to his support, both brothers were able to develop multifaceted missionary, educational, and diplomatic work, which decisively influenced the cultural, spiritual, ecclesiastical, and state development of Great Moravia.
