Description:
During the reign of Charles Robert, the minting of gold coins called florins began in Hungary in 1325. Their name and iconography were borrowed from the Florentine coins – fiorino d'oro, which were produced in Florence from 1252. The obverse depicted a lily, and the reverse featured the figure of Saint John the Baptist, the patron saint of Florence. The image was complemented by the inscription S IOHANNES B, which means the abbreviation Saint John. The Hungarian coin differed only in the inscription KAROLV REX, referring to the issuer of the coin, the Hungarian king Charles Robert. Their quality ranged from 99 to 99.7% gold in the coin. The weight of the florins was over 3.55 g, with the pure gold weight in them being up to 3.52 g. Florins were produced in three Hungarian mints located in Buda, Kremnica, and Transylvanian Cluj. Since they were minted without mint marks, we are still unable to distinguish them by place of production. Thanks to their high quality and developed international trade, they were massively exported abroad. Their production lasted until the death of Charles Robert in 1342, and his successor Louis the Great continued their minting for some time.
Obverse:
On the obverse of the collector euro coin is the obverse side of the historical florin of King Charles Robert of Anjou with the Florentine lily and the inscription KAROLV REX. On the left side is the coat of arms of the Anjou family, as well as the coat of arms with a double cross and the depiction of Charles Robert of Anjou on the throne. At the top of the coin field is the national emblem of the Slovak Republic. To the right of the florin is the sun as a symbol of gold, wealth, and glory, and below it is a miner extracting ore. At the bottom is the inscription of the state name SLOVAKIA, above which is the year 2025 and the nominal value of 100 EURO. In the right part below the miner are the stylized initials of the author of the artistic design of the euro coin Branislav Ronai BR, and mirrored on the left side is the mark of the Kremnica Mint, a state enterprise.
Reverse:
On the reverse of the collector euro coin is the reverse side of the historical florin of King Charles Robert of Anjou with the figure of Saint John the Baptist and the inscription S IOHANNES B. At the end of the inscription is a crown. On the sides are placed figures of coin minters at work. Between them, in the upper circular inscription, is a decorative ornament derived from the interweaving of Anjou lilies, and below them is a horizontal band with lilies. At the top is the beginning of the inscription INTRODUCTION, which continues at the bottom of the euro coin with the words GOLD COIN IN HUNGARY 1325 in two lines separated by a line.
