The tall ship, a marvel of naval engineering, is magnificent, and the three-masted (or fishing) schooner on this selectively colored silver coin with a purity of 99.99% has its own majesty. As seen on the reverse of the coin, this type of schooner does not have square top sails; instead, the sails are placed in a fore-and-aft line, allowing the ship better performance against the wind. Between 1880 and 1920, hundreds of fishing schooners were launched from shipyards across Atlantic Canada. The fishing vessels, built with high cargo capacity and smaller crew requirements, replaced square-rigged ships as the backbone of coastal trade by the end of the 19th century, when wind-powered equivalents of today's freight trucks were in use. Exempt from HST/GST.
