In the Dubník area, in the northern part of the Slanské Hills in eastern Slovakia, there are old opal mines, which are a world-famous deposit of the most beautiful European gemstone – precious opal. Until the discovery of opal deposits in Mexico and Australia in the 19th century, Dubník was the only location for its mining in the world. Mining activity developed mainly between 1845 and 1880, during which the deposit was leased by the Goldschmidt family from Vienna. The largest known precious opal was found in 1771 on the surface. It weighed 607 grams and was named Harlequin. Opal mining ended in 1922, and later attempts to revive it were unsuccessful. Attempts to resume mining are still being made today.
Extensive mining works have become a wintering ground for 16 species of bats and represent the most significant known wintering site for the Bechstein's bat in Slovakia. The Dubník mines were declared a protected deposit in 1964, which was re-categorized as a protected area in 1996. Since 2004, the Dubník mines have been an area of European significance.

Obverse:
On the obverse of the coin is depicted the historical Isabella's necklace set with Dubník opals. In the background, it is complemented by the silhouette of a bat, for which the Dubník mines are an important wintering site. At the bottom of the coin field is the national emblem of the Slovak Republic, and above it is the year 2014. On the left side of the coin field is the name of the state SLOVAKIA in the inscription.

Reverse:
On the reverse of the coin is depicted the silhouette of a bat in the interior of the mine. At the bottom is the entrance to the Jozef adit, which is characteristic of the Dubník mines. At the top of the coin field are the inscriptions OPAL DEPOSIT and DUBNÍK MINES. The stylized initials of the designer of the coin's artistic design, Mária Poldaufová "MP," and the mark of the Kremnica Mint are placed at the bottom edge of the coin.
