Banská Bystrica, the metropolis of central Slovakia, lies in the Zvolen basin under the Urpín hill in the valley of the Hron river. In 1255, King Béla IV elevated it to a free royal town. Gradually, it became a leading mining town, where mainly silver and copper were mined. The local Thurzo-Fugger company was one of the most important copper producers in the world. The prosperity of the mines in the 15th and 16th centuries was reflected in the architectural development of the town. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was rebuilt, the house of King Matthias was built, and a fortified area of the Town Castle was created. Public administration buildings and wealthy townhouses were constructed. Mining continued to prosper in the 17th century, as evidenced by the reconstruction of houses in the square in the Renaissance style. The appearance of the town after the fire in 1761 was marked by Baroque in various reconstructions. Mining gradually declined, and in the 19th century, craft production gained greater importance. The town has preserved many unique monuments in its center and was declared a municipal heritage reserve in 1955.
Obverse:
The obverse of the coin features the Renaissance facade of the Benický House, with the Church of St. Cross added to the Pisárska Bastion, which is part of the fortification of the Banská Bystrica castle area, in the background. An ornamental element completes the composition in the lower part of the coin field. The state emblem of the Slovak Republic is on the left side of the coin. At its bottom edge is the inscription of the state name SLOVAKIA, followed by the year 2016. In the upper right part of the coin field is the designation of the nominal value 20 EURO. The mark of the Kremnica Mint is located in the lower right part of the coin field.
Reverse:
The reverse of the coin depicts the architectural dominants of Banská Bystrica – the parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the clock tower, the barbican tower, the Church of St. Francis Xavier, and in the foreground, the Baroque Marian column. The composition is complemented by the historically oldest preserved seal of Banská Bystrica, expressing the mining tradition of the town, and an ornamental element around the perimeter. At the edge of the coin is the inscription HERITAGE RESERVE BANSKÁ BYSTRICA. The stylized initials of the name and surname of the coin's design author acad. sculptor Michal Gavula MG are located in the lower right part of the coin field.
