Aviation in Switzerland began with pioneers in the field of balloon aviation at the end of the 19th century. In 1897, the Federal Council decided to establish the Swiss Airship Company, ten years after military airships were established in Europe. Before that, pioneers like Eduard Spelterini and the Piccard brothers conducted the first test balloon flights for the army. With the outbreak of the First World War and the development of modern air forces, the significance of balloons declined; in 1937, the balloon corps was disbanded.

The series begins with the 20-franc coin "Pioneers of Swiss Aviation," which depicts the early days when hot air balloons first began to conquer the skies.

The obverse side depicts hot air balloons of various shapes and baskets, reflecting the technical development of the time. These illustrations, however, show not only technological progress but also the passion of the first Swiss aviation pioneers. Balloons rise into the air against the backdrop of Saanenland and the Swiss mountains Gummfluh, La Videmanette, and Rüeblihorn. The obverse also bears the inscription in German "Pioniere der Schweizer Luftfahrt." The reverse side is adorned with a propeller blade, symbolizing technological progress up to the present day. Along the edge is the inscription "CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA 2025." The design is completed by the nominal value of 20 francs and the letter "B" for Bern.

The special coin "Pioneers of Swiss Aviation" is made of silver and weighs 20 g. The coin is issued in a mintage of 3,500 pieces in "Proof" quality in a presentation case and 7,500 pieces out of circulation in a blister pack.
