Jan Amos Komenský (in Latin Comenius) (* March 28, 1592, Nivnice, Czech Republic – † November 15, 1670, Amsterdam, Netherlands) was a Czech (but also claimed by Hungarians, Slovaks, Germans, etc.) educator, linguist, natural scientist, humanist, philosopher, politician. He had Slovak ancestors. His surname is probably derived from the village of Komňa in the Uherské Hradiště district.
