Description:
The Hungarian central bank issued new banknotes of 2,000 and 5,000 forints on March 1, 2017, although they were declared legal tender as of November 15, 2016. Existing old banknotes of the same denominations will circulate concurrently until July 31, 2017, after which they will be withdrawn but not demonetized until July 31, 2037. A new 1000 forint banknote is planned for the second half of 2017.
On the front side of the banknote is a portrait of Gabriel Bethlen, Prince of Transylvania, one of the leaders of the anti-Habsburg uprising during the Thirty Years' War. In August 1620, he was elected King of Hungary (rex electus) at the assembly in Banská Bystrica, but he did not have himself crowned to avoid jeopardizing his path to a peace agreement with Emperor Ferdinand II. The assembly's election took place in the current building of the Central Slovak Gallery at Dolná Street No. 8 in Banská Bystrica.
