Specification
Samuel Mikovíni (1686 - 23. 3. 1750) - a scholar of world renown, engraver, mathematician, geodesist, astronomer, cartographer, water engineer, architect, and educator, is among the leading figures of science and technology in the 18th century.
His knowledge and abilities contributed to various scientific disciplines and economic practice. In his work, he combined artistic talent with an enlightened view of astronomy, geography, cartography, and hydrology. He created the first modern maps of most counties of Hungary, based on his own measurements and using his unique cartographic method. He designed and implemented protective embankments on the Danube and Váh rivers, built regulatory and drainage structures in several regions of Hungary. He developed plans for the construction of the royal palace in Buda, for which he carried out the modification of the castle hill and the construction of a waterworks. In the vicinity of Banská Štiavnica, he used water from a system of artificial lakes for mining purposes. In 1735, by order of the monarch, he founded the first Mining School in Europe in Banská Štiavnica and became its director and professor. Thanks to his contributions, the mining industry in central Slovakia at that time was among the most technically advanced in the world.
Obverse:
On the obverse of the coin is depicted a part of Mikovíni's map of the Bratislava county from 1733 with allegorical figures and Bratislava Castle. In the upper part is a detail of the map with period names of the city Bratislava - Posony and Presburg, on the right the denomination of the coin 500 Sk, below it the state emblem. At the bottom edge of the coin is the name of the state "SLOVAK REPUBLIC", below it the year of minting 2000.
Reverse:
On the reverse of the coin is a portrait of Samuel Mikovíni, surveying instruments with a motif of the solar system, the name and surname SAMUEL MIKOVÍNI and the dates of his birth and death 1686 - 1750.
