Slovak Karst National Park is located in the southwestern part of eastern Slovakia. It was declared in 2002 with an area of 34,611 ha and is the largest karst area in Slovakia. It is characterized by numerous karst forms, canyon-like valleys of the Slaná River and the Štítnik Stream, caves, and abysses. Characteristic for this area are the Zádielska and Hájska gorges, as well as the well-known and frequently visited Gombasecká, Jasovská, and Domica caves. A rarity is the Silická ľadnica, an abyss with permanent ice decoration. With its diverse flora, it is one of the richest areas in Central Europe; the rare dog's tooth violet is particularly known. From a botanical point of view, the most important are endemic species, such as the Turnian red helleborine and the rough-fruited Klášterský draba. The national park is one of the most ornithologically significant areas in Slovakia and also has a diverse representation of other fauna. Noteworthy is the occurrence of all 24 species of bats from the territory of Slovakia.
Obverse:
On the obverse of the coin, two yellowhammers are depicted in a semicircle sitting on a tree branch in the upper part. Below them is the nominal value of 500 Sk, and below it is the state emblem. At the bottom edge of the coin is the name of the state SLOVAK REPUBLIC.
Reverse:
On the reverse of the coin, a stalactite cave is depicted, with the dog's tooth violet flower in the foreground. Below the flower is the year of minting 2005. At the bottom edge of the coin is the name of the national park SLOVAK KARST NATIONAL PARK. The initials of the coin's design author Mária Poldaufová MP and the mark of the Czech Mint, stylized letters ČM, are located in the lower right part of the cave.
