Banská Štiavnica, the oldest mining town in Slovakia, held a dominant position in Europe as early as the beginning of the 13th century. The oldest known municipal seal in medieval Hungary is preserved on a document issued in 1275. From the 13th to the 19th century, it was one of the most important centers of gold and silver mining and simultaneously the most significant center of mining science, technology, and education. In the 18th century, the most sophisticated mining water management system in the world was completed in the town and its surroundings, featuring progressive mining, processing, and water pumping technology. It achieved world significance thanks to the Mining Academy (1762-1919), established here by Empress Maria Theresa as the first of its kind in the world. For its unique architectural monuments, it was declared an urban conservation area in 1950. Banská Štiavnica and its technical monuments were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 1993.
