Specification

In the 15th century, but especially in the first third of the 16th century, Hungary was threatened by intense Turkish raids. In 1526, at the Battle of Mohács, the Turks defeated the Christian army, thus opening the way to the Hungarian lowlands. After occupying the capital city of Buda, the Hungarian Diet decided in 1536 that the main and coronation city of Hungary would be Pressburg (today's Bratislava), which had not only a favorable location but also strategic fortifications. Pressburg also became the Diet city of the kingdom and the seat of the most important institutions. The coronation site of Hungarian monarchs was the Gothic parish church of St. Martin. Between 1563 and 1830, 11 Hungarian kings and 8 royal consorts were crowned there.
As the third of the Hungarian kings, Matthias II was crowned in Pressburg on November 19, 1608, who ruled from 1611 also in the Czech lands and from 1612 in the entire Roman-German Empire until his death in 1619.

Description of the coin

Obverse side:
The obverse of the coin features a composition of the interior and tower of the coronation Cathedral of St. Martin and Bratislava Castle with part of its fortifications. The name of the state SLOVAK REPUBLIC is inscribed on both sides of the composition. In the lower part of the coin, the state emblem is centered, with the year 2008 divided on either side. The stylized initials of the coin's design authors are placed above the fortifications at the edge of the coin, with Miroslav Ronai MR on the left and Branislav Ronai BR on the right.

Reverse side:
The reverse of the coin depicts a portrait of King Matthias II with coronation insignia - the Hungarian royal crown and the coronation sword in the foreground. On the right side, the tower of Michael's Gate and the tower of the Franciscan Church in Bratislava are depicted. Along the right edge of the coin, in three lines, are the inscriptions CORONATION OF MATTHIAS II, BRATISLAVA, and the year of coronation 1608. At the bottom edge is the designation of the nominal value 5000 Sk. Below the sword's hilt is the mark of the Kremnica Mint MK between two dies.
