In the year 2025 we commemorate 700 years since a significant event in the history of medieval Hungary – the introduction of the gold coin florin, which became a symbol of monetary reform, economic stability, and Hungary's commercial significance in Europe. On this occasion, the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) issues a gold collector's euro coin with a nominal value of 100 euros – it is a commemorative coin for collectors and investors. It will be a truly grand culmination of the last issue at the end of 2025 in the month of November.

Gold Collector's Coin – an artistic and historical message

This gold coin 100 euros 2025 was created based on a public anonymous art competition organized by NBS. It combines artistic quality, historical accuracy, and numismatic value. The obverse features a motif of the florin with heraldic symbols, and the reverse shows a portrait of King Charles I Robert of Anjou, who introduced this gold currency in Hungary in 1325. The winning design was created by Slovak medalist Mgr. art. Branislav Ronai, whose coin design won 1st prize. The expert committee of the National Bank of Slovakia recommended his design for realization.

Florin – a historical gold coin that changed Hungary

Florin (lat. florenus) was a gold coin with a high gold content, first minted in 1252 in Florence, Italy. Thanks to its high quality and trust among traders, it quickly spread throughout Europe. In Hungary, the florin began to be minted in 1325 during the reign of Charles Robert of Anjou. Hungarian florins were minted from nearly 24-carat gold and became a reliable currency not only in Central Europe but also in international trade. The introduction of the florin was part of economic reform in Hungary, which brought about the centralization of mints, support for precious metal mining, and the renewal of state finances. Florins from Hungary were mainly minted in the Mint Kremnica, which became one of the most significant mints in Europe.

The tradition of Slovak minting – from florin to euro

Mint Kremnica, founded in 1328, is among the oldest functioning mints in the world. It was here that the first Hungarian gold florins were minted, and today modern Slovak euro coins and commemorative coins of NBS are produced here. Slovak collector coins, such as this new gold coin 100 euros 2025, continue the rich minting heritage of Slovakia and at the same time remind us of historical events, personalities, and milestones of our territory.
