Last year, the National Bank of Slovakia introduced the last two 5 € coins from the first series depicting the fauna and flora of Slovakia. After the great success of this series, the NBS included a second series of 5 € coins in the issuance plan, which, due to their affordability, became interesting not only for collectors but also attracted the general public.
The first coin from the second series is dedicated to the European pond turtle. It is the only native species of turtle that naturally occurs in the habitats of Slovakia, where it is considered endangered. It can be spotted in the Eastern Slovak Lowland, in Záhorie, and other locations. An interesting fact is the protected area in the Eastern Slovak Lowland with an area of 27.36 ha, where direct protection of this species is ensured. The turtle primarily feeds on insects and invertebrates.

The NBS announced a public anonymous competition in March 2024, which received nine proposals from eight authors. The first prize and realization were awarded to the author Karol Ličko.
On the obverse, the European pond turtle is depicted in the center of the coin field from an oblique view of the front part of the body, under which is a blooming water lily flower. The design is suitably complemented by a strip of reeds, in which this creature often hides. The scene appears dynamic thanks to the diagonally suggested movement of the animal.
On the reverse, the composition further develops the escalating dynamics, enhanced by the plastic suggestion of bubbles evoking underwater activity. The protagonists are two turtles. The design uniquely captures the typical pattern on the underside of the shell, which is unique to each individual – similar to a human fingerprint.

The coin will undoubtedly become interesting not only for collectors but also for all enthusiasts of Slovak nature. Its artistic processing highlights the beauty and fragility of species living in our aquatic habitats and reminds us of the need for their protection.
By including the European pond turtle in the second series, the NBS not only expands the successful collection of Slovak fauna and flora but also promotes environmental awareness and the public's relationship with nature. Such coins have not only numismatic value but also educational significance – they draw attention to endangered species that need attention.
Thanks to its high-quality artistic processing, attractive theme, and popular denomination, the new coin has all the prerequisites to become a sought-after collector's item and a valuable reminder of Slovakia's natural heritage.
The coin will be issued in a quantity of 50,000 pieces.
