New 5 euro coin - Danube Salmon, Fauna and Flora in Slovakia

Although we are already past the halfway point of this year, there are still several interesting numismatic issues to look forward to for collectors. In September 2025, a new collector's euro coin with a nominal value of €5, named Danube Salmon and part of the Fauna and Flora in Slovakia edition, will be released. The National Bank of Slovakia organized a public anonymous art competition for this occasion, from which Tomáš Lamač, DiS., known for his attention to detail and ability to artistically capture natural motifs, emerged as the winner.

The coin is made of common metal – brass (composition Cu63/Zn37), has a diameter of 34 mm, and weighs 19.1 grams. Its edge is precisely serrated, adding aesthetic value. The quality of the minting is marked as BK (standard quality), with each piece delivered in protective foil.

The obverse side of the coin depicts two Danube Salmon gracefully floating beneath the water surface of the river. Additionally, it incorporates the state emblem of the Slovak Republic, the year of issue 2025, and the country's name. The reverse side portrays the typical habitat of the Danube Salmon – a stream under a mountain massif, where the fish move at the bottom among the stones. This detail appears exceptionally realistic and artistically impressive.

The Danube Salmon (Hucho hucho) is the largest salmonid species living in Slovakia, and it is also among the endangered and strictly protected species. Its occurrence is tied to clean mountain and sub-mountain rivers, which corresponds to the natural symbolism of the entire issue. With this, the NBS continues the series that, since 2021, has been introducing the public to the richness of Slovak nature through collector coins with a thematic focus on the fauna and flora of Slovakia.

This coin is significant not only from an artistic and numismatic perspective but also highlights the need to protect Slovakia's natural heritage. It combines the values of aesthetics, education, and ecological awareness – making it an ideal collector's piece for anyone who appreciates the beauty and symbolism hidden in details.

The Danube Salmon €5 collector's coin concludes the Fauna and Flora in Slovakia series and all coins can be found on our website in the section
