Portugal is located on the western coast of the Iberian Peninsula. Administratively, it also includes the Azores and Madeira islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Since January 1, 1986, Portugal has been a member of the European Union. In 1999, the Portuguese escudo was replaced by the official currency Euro.
