The Honorary Medal for 40 Years of Faithful Service of Franz Joseph I was an award of Austria-Hungary granted for long-term loyalty in military or public service. It was introduced by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1908 on the occasion of his 60th anniversary on the throne, to honor four decades of continuous service by subjects. This award was established at a time when the monarchy maintained an extensive apparatus of military and civil employees. The medal was intended to motivate loyalty and stability in state service and highlight personal loyalty to the monarch. It was designated for officers, non-commissioned officers, state officials, or court employees who had served at least 40 years.
