Specification
The motif of the postage stamp is the obverse and reverse of the silver half-denarius of the Frankish king Charles the Simple from the years 898 − 929, minted by the Bledonis mint located in the French town of Lons-le-Saunier, which was found in 1965 during the research of the foundations of St. Martin's Church in Nitra on Martins Hill. It is a rare case where the occurrence of a foreign coin as currency is documented in our territory. Undoubtedly, it is the oldest evidence of the occurrence of currency in our territory for the purpose of facilitating international trade relations and gradually replacing barter trade with currencies. On the stamp coupons, the patron of customs officers, St. Matthew, is depicted in the form of an angel taken from a Carolingian ivory carving and the calligraphic mark of the Frankish king Louis the Child from the Rafelstetten customs ordinance with the name of the original manuscript Inquisitio de Theloneis. It has survived only in the form of a description from the years 1254 – 1265 called Codex traditionum ecclesiae Pataviensis ab Ottone de Lonsdorf, and it is deposited in the Bavarian Main State Archive in Munich. The stamp sheet is finally complemented by a pictorial representation of the evangelist Matthew, the patron of customs officers, created according to the templates of period Carolingian manuscripts of the Reims school.
