Specification
The motifs on the stamp and the sheet originate from the illuminated decorations of two contemporary codices from the environment of the Bratislava Chapter. The stamp features an initial from an unknown Franciscan manuscript from 1494 (antiphonary?) with a depiction of a scriptorium: St. Francis is accompanied by a scribe (notator) and an unknown donor (the cut-out initial is now owned by the City Museum in Bratislava). The background of the sheet then utilized the decoration of a folio from the Bratislava Missal No. VII, which was written for the chapter in 1489 by Lukáš Apáti (from Opatovce), a canon of the Veszprém and Eger chapters. The codex has survived to this day only in the form of several folios in the collections of the Bratislava City Archive and the City Museum in Bratislava. It is significant mainly for combining Gothic and Renaissance ornaments within a single manuscript. The Gothic ones are characterized by the use of colorful flowers with plant tendrils on the upper and lower edges, as well as between the columns, while all’antica motifs, typical for the court of Matthias Corvinus and the Esztergom archbishopric, appeared in the scenes in the initials. In our case, it is part of the mass texts Proprium de tempore, specifically the office for the Holy Trinity (De sancta trinitate) and the rubric ad romanos.
