Specification
After passing Contrada dei Magazzeni or Contrada dei Fossi, we quickly reach an altitude of 751 m, from where we have an unrestricted view of the surroundings. The fortified core of the First Tower with a pentagonal base rests directly on the rock and is considered one of the oldest Italian towers (dated to the 11th century). It consists of a central bastion and two arches, with the outer wall of one of the arches decorated with battlements being a remnant of the original defensive wall. Opposite the entrance, in a small square, we can admire the statue of B. Marabini and the cannons donated by Switzerland to the Republic of San Marino in 1989. Once, the coat of arms of the republic, originating from the Baroque period, was placed at the entrance, later moved from here to the vestibule of Palazzo Pubblico. Of the two cannons placed in the courtyard, donated by Victor Emmanuel III, blank shots are still fired during public holidays. Inside stands a bell tower, probably from the 16th century, and the "Penna" tower, dating from the second half of the 15th century. Some of the dungeons located in the fortress were used as prison cells until 1970. On the left side stands a small church of St. Barbara. It was built in the 1960s, with a stone shield above the entrance doors dated to the Middle Ages.
