The most significant Roman fortress in the province of Pannonia was Carnuntum, located near the present-day village of Petronell in Austria. The Roman camp was built here by Tiberius during the war with the Marcomanni in the year 6 AD. Later, it was rebuilt into a stone fortification of the castrum type and became the seat of the XIV Legion Gemina. At the beginning of the 2nd century, Emperor Trajan elevated the camp to a city – municipium, which became a military-commercial center on the Amber Road and the capital of the province of Pannonia. The most famous Roman monument of Carnuntum is the Heidentor, the so-called "pagan gate," which was built outside the city in the 4th century by Roman Emperor Constantius II (337 – 361). Originally, it consisted of 4 pillars (tetrapylons) vaulted with a cross vault, under which stood a massive column with the emperor's statue.
