The name of the fortress Gerulata is known from a medieval copy of a Roman map from the 4th century, the so-called Tabula Peutingeriana. It depicts road communications on the territory of the Roman Empire from Spain to India. In the 18th century, it was purchased by the Austrian Prince Eugene of Savoy, who donated it to the Imperial Court Library in Vienna (today the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek).
