On a limestone cliff above the Poprad River stands the majestic Ľubovňa Castle. It is one of the best-preserved and most visited castles in Slovakia. King Andrew III had it built at the end of the 13th century near Stará Ľubovňa. The first written mention of the castle is from the year 1311. Gradually, it became an important administrative, military, and economic center.
In 1412, a peace treaty was signed at Ľubovňa Castle by the Hungarian King Sigismund of Luxembourg and the Polish King Władysław II Jagiełło (Jogaila). Later that same year, on November 8, 1412, Sigismund of Luxembourg issued a document based on which he pledged 16 Spiš towns and the castles Ľubovňa and Podolínec to the Polish king. Ľubovňa Castle became the administrative and governing center of the pledged territory and the seat of Polish governors.
The core of the castle consisted of a round tower, a Gothic palace, and a kitchen. During the Renaissance reconstruction of the castle in the second quarter of the 16th century, the defense pillars became a rondel and an ear bastion. After a fire in 1553, a Renaissance palace was built. During the governorship of Stanisław Lubomirski, before 1627, the first stage of Baroque reconstruction took place, resulting in a high bastion with an entrance to the first courtyard of the castle (depicted on the FDC), the first courtyard, and the eastern bastion. In later periods, a Baroque palace and a Baroque chapel were added. The stamp on the FDC shows the ground plan of the castle. Between 1656 and 1661, the Polish coronation jewels were stored in the castle. The castle was visited by several Hungarian and Polish kings.
The castle returned to Hungarian administration on November 9, 1772. In the 19th century, it belonged to the Raisz family and from 1882 to 1945 to the Zamoyski family. The gradual restoration of the castle began in the 1960s, and today Ľubovňa Castle is almost in its original historical form.
