In World War I, about 10 million soldiers and 7 million civilians died. From the territory of Slovakia, about
400,000 soldiers were dressed in military uniforms, of which nearly 70,000 fell. During the war, the Austro-Hungarian administration hired several architects who built memorials to the fallen soldiers on the battlefields of World War I. Among them was the significant Art Nouveau Slovak architect Dušan Jurkovič. Jurkovič built several memorials in the Western Carpathians, mostly in the territory of today's Poland, which are the theme not only of the stamp (Regietów) but also of the first day cover (Przełęcz Małastowska). A cross from Riegietów was chosen for the special stamp. By issuing the stamp, Slovenská pošta, a.s. commemorates the senseless victims of the war as a memory and a warning for the future.
