On May 8, 2015, we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. The greatest conflict in human history to date affected all continents except Antarctica. In less than six years, it claimed tens of millions of victims among soldiers and civilians, who bore the brunt of the horrors of the war cataclysm. World War II was specific in several respects compared to previous ones. It involved previously unimaginable human and material capacities, utilized new types of weapons, and new methods of warfare.
May 8 was established as a public holiday in Slovakia after 1945, although the anti-Hitler coalition forces liberated its territory earlier (Bratislava on April 4, the last villages Makov and Klokočov on May 3). Liberation meant not only clearing Slovakia of the German occupation forces that had been operating there since the outbreak of the Slovak National Uprising, but also secondarily the end of the clerical regime that ruled from 1938 to 1945.
