Sheet Czech Republic 2005 - Protected Fauna and Flora of the Krkonoše Mountains. Author: Libuše and Jaromír Knotkovi Engraving Author: Martin Srb Printing Sheets: combination of 4 stamps + 4 coupons Printing Method: steel engraving from flat plates in black color combined with multicolor offset Issue Number: A0439 Release Date: 22.06.2005 Specification: The sheet depicts the extraordinary diversity and richness of the Krkonoše nature with our highest mountain Sněžka (1602 m above sea level) and at the same time the most precious (and most endangered) area of the park. The Krkonoše Mountains were declared our first national park in 1963. They are considered a unique European transitional link from mid-mountains to high mountains and represent the most naturally rich area of the Czech Republic. The nature on the slopes of the Krkonoše is arranged into four vegetation altitudinal zones: submontane (between 400-800 m above sea level), montane (800-1200 m above sea level), subalpine (1200-1450 m above sea level), and alpine (1450-1602 m above sea level). More than 1250 species of flowering plants occur here, which is almost half of the original flora of the Czech Republic, and over 320 species of vertebrates, mostly birds. Remarkably rich is the share of glacial relicts (plant and animal species from the time of the last glaciation) and predominantly plant endemics (species developed and occurring only in a single place in the world). It is a unique mosaic of ecosystems of alpine peaks, grasslands, and peat bogs of plateau and leeward slopes of glacial cirques. It thus represents a unique combination of northern, Central European, and alpine organisms and their communities. In 1992, the Krkonoše National Park was granted the status of a UNESCO biosphere reserve. source: ceskaposta.cz
