The White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area was declared in 1980 on an area of 715 km2 and since 1996 it has also been a UNESCO biosphere reserve. It is the highest mountain range on the southwestern edge of the Carpathian system itself (175 - 970 m above sea level). The entire area, especially the southern part, has been cultivated by humans for centuries. Typical are local farms - stylish cottages surrounded by fields and greenery. Perhaps thanks to the regular mowing of extensive meadow areas, exceptionally valuable natural values have been preserved here. Above all, these are orchid meadows with orchids and other rare and endangered plant species. They belong to the species-richest meadow vegetation in Central Europe.
