Třeboňsko, originally a monotonous marshland region of South Bohemia, gained its diversity mainly through the construction of extensive pond networks, which began as early as the 16th century. Today, the harmonious alternation of water and agricultural areas with typical settlements and forest stands is an internationally significant area from an ornithological point of view. Many species of songbirds and most of our water and marsh birds occur here, such as the white and grey heron, the marsh harrier, and the sea eagle has nested here again. An important part of the Třeboň flora are the embankment stands of mighty oaks and a very valuable variant of the Třeboň pine. The sand dunes, peat bogs, wet meadows, and ponds and pools with water lilies, yellow water lilies, bladderworts, or pondweeds have specific flora. Various species of insects, amphibians, about twenty-five species of fish, several pairs of river otters, and the re-established European beaver live here. The most valuable small-scale protected sites include Červené blato, Stará řeka, Velký and Malý Tisý, Novořecké marshes, Meanders of Lužnice, and others. Třeboňsko was declared a protected landscape area in 1979 on an area of 700 km2 in the flat pond basin through which the Lužnice River flows. This area was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve as early as 1977.
