The sheet follows the completed issue of biosphere reserves. The stamps depict exotic orchids that come from territories outside our republic. It is the first time in the history of not only Czech but also Czechoslovak stamp production.
Orchids growing in our territory have, of course, appeared on stamps many times in the past. It is no secret that tropical and subtropical orchids are successfully cultivated in the Czech Republic not only in botanical gardens but also in greenhouses, winter gardens, and the homes of our citizens. These growers are united by the Czech Orchid Society, which celebrated its 125th anniversary on July 31, 2011. The Czech Orchid Society also provided its orchids, according to which the entire sheet is painted. The cultivation of exotic orchids has a great tradition in our country. After all, the world's greatest "orchid hunter" is referred to as the Czech native Benedikt Roezl. Others included the Klaboch brothers, Seidl, Houda, Pecháček, Vráz, and Frič, who returned from the tropics with compromised health, Knobloch, who died in Mexico, or Mr. Haenke, who was murdered in Bolivia. Natives of the Czechoslovak Republic thus stood at the very beginning of the import and cultivation of exotic orchids in Europe. Therefore, it is no wonder that current growers have great experience not only in their cultivation but also in propagation. Thus, rare orchids from all over the world are commonly found in our territory in great species diversity. In addition to botanical species, hybrid orchid species are practically grown in every second household today, which are commonly available in sales networks. The shapes of their flowers and colors cannot be compared with botanical species. First-day covers and special postmarks are issued with the stamps. The cover for the 10 CZK stamp features the orchid Bulbophyllum echinolabium.
For the stamp with a nominal value of 14 CZK, the first-day cover features the orchid Stanhopea oculata. For the 18 CZK stamp, the first-day cover features the orchid Coelogyne cristata, and on the last stamp with a nominal value of 20 CZK, the orchid Catasetum pileatum is depicted. The covers are printed by steel engraving from the surface in purple color - for the 10 CZK stamp, brown-red - for the 14 CZK stamp, blue for the 18 CZK stamp, and in green color for the 20 CZK stamp. The postmark for the 10 CZK stamp features the orchid Aeranthes grandiflora and the text: Prague, 5. 9. 2012, on the 14 CZK stamp, the main motif is the plant Myrmecophila tibicinis and the text: Prague 5. 9. 2012, on the 18 CZK stamp is Laelia purpurata and the text: Prague 5. 9. 2012, on the 20 CZK stamp is Paphiopedilum fowliei and the text: Prague 5. 9. 2012.
