The Beskydy Mountains are located in the northeastern Moravia in the Valašsko region, in the southeastern Czech Silesia, in southern Poland, and in northern Slovakia in the Orava region. The Beskydy are mostly forested mountains with rounded peaks, with rocks occasionally emerging to the surface. The highest peak is Babí hora (1725 m), located on the border between Poland and Slovakia in the Orava and Żywiec Beskydy.
Generally, the Beskydy have the character of mid-mountains interspersed with a series of furrowed and basin-like depressions. Typical are parallel mountain ranges arranged one after another and tied to the occurrence of more resistant rocks. There is mostly a smoothly modeled relief, whose morphology reflects the rock composition of the flysch substrate (a formation of sandstones, conglomerates, and clayey shales). On steep slopes, slope movements are common. The original forest cover was spatially limited and species-altered in favor of spruce forests. Towards the east, grassy areas called poloniny increase. Their use spread pastoral colonization in the 15th to 17th centuries.
The Moravian-Silesian Beskydy rise above the Frenštát furrow, bordered from the south by the Rožnov furrow. The Ostravice River divides the mountains into two groups. To the east is the massif of Lysá hora, Travný, and Ropice. West of the Ostravice River, the band of resistant rocks (Smrk, Kněhyně, and Radhošť) diminishes, as does the entire Radhošť highland. Smrk is separated from it by the deep valley of Čeladenka. South of the Rožnov furrow, the mountains continue with the group of Vsetín Hills (Vysoká, Vsacká Tanečnice), characterized by gentle slopes and overall a landscape with mild, soft shapes. West of the Vsetín Bečva river, the Hostýn Hills (Klečský Javorník, Hostýn) follow this group, descending quite steeply to the north.
In the Beskydy, typical mountain and forest wildlife can be found, such as: deer, wild boar, fox, marten, badger, bear, wolf, lynx, or wildcat. Among birds, one can see flying: tit, thrush, woodpecker, capercaillie, buzzard, short-toed eagle, common buzzard, raven, hazel grouse, and eagle owl.
