Brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright trained as mechanics and set up a bicycle repair shop in Dayton, USA. During the day they repaired, at night they secretly assembled something. They were building an airplane. First, they tried their luck with a glider. The test flights were conducted near Kitty Hawk, a town in North Carolina on the Atlantic Ocean coast. Later, they mounted a gasoline engine of their own design on the glider, and on December 17, 1903, they flew for the first time on this machine. The airplane had a wingspan of over 12 meters and weighed 338 kilograms. Orville lay on the airplane next to the engine, and the airplane took off on the launch rail. It was not an overwhelming flight. The airplane rose to a height of about 60 centimeters above the sandy ground, flew 53 meters, and the flight lasted 12 seconds. However, it was a famous flight. It went down in history as the first, as the fulfillment of man's ancient desire to fly like a bird. Moreover, unlike previous attempts, it did not claim any human lives or health. This day marked the beginning of the history of air transport. It developed slowly at first, then more and more rapidly. The Wright brothers significantly contributed to its further development. The presented issue is released on the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' first flight, which permanently inscribed them in the history of air transport. The stamp artistically depicts the airplane on which its designers successfully took to the air for the first time in history. The first day cover features the test machines with which the Wright brothers conducted their flight experiments.
