Ján Jessenius (27. 12. 1566 – 21. 6. 1621), a physician, scientist, and rector of Charles University in Prague, was among the leading scientists at the turn of the 16th – 17th century. He left extraordinarily innovative works in medicine for his time and is considered one of the founders of anatomy. In 1600, he performed the first public dissection in Prague, for which he also published a lecture. His anatomy lectures were renowned and very progressive. He is also the author of significant works on bones, blood, and surgery. He published and wrote philosophical, historical, and theological works. Politically, he engaged on the side of the Czech estates, which led to opposition with Catholic imperial centralism. He became one of the leading figures of the estates' uprising. In 1621, the uprising of the Czech estates was suppressed by the Battle of White Mountain, Jessenius was accused of rebellion and insult to majesty and sentenced to death. He was executed along with twenty-six other Czech lords at the Old Town Square in Prague.
Obverse side:
On the obverse of the coin is depicted a period scene from the first public dissection performed by Ján Jessenius in Prague in 1600. In the background is the silhouette of the Church of Our Lady before Týn from the Old Town Square in Prague. At the top edge of the coin field is the state emblem of the Slovak Republic. To the right of it is the name of the state SLOVAKIA in the inscription. Below the state emblem is the denomination of the coin 10 EURO in two lines. The year 2016 is at the bottom edge of the coin. The mark of the Kremnica Mint MK and the stylized initials of the name and surname of the coin's design author Mária Poldaufová MP are in the lower left part of the coin field.
Reverse side:
On the reverse of the coin is depicted a portrait of Ján Jessenius. To the right of the portrait is the name and surname JÁN JESSENIUS in the inscription, and to the left are the years of his birth and death 1566 and 1621 in two lines.
