The city of Messolonghi was besieged by Ottoman-Egyptian forces for almost a year during the Greek revolution. Due to total starvation, on the night of April 9th to 10th, 1826, approximately 7,000 to 10,500 inhabitants attempted a mass secret escape (exodus) through the walls into the mountains. However, the plan was revealed, leading to a massive massacre in which thousands of people perished and thousands of women and children were taken into slavery. Only about 1,000 Greek fighters reached safety. This sacrifice deeply affected contemporary Europe, strengthened the Philhellene movement, and contributed to the later recognition of Greece's independence.
