Since 2008, Monnaie de Paris has been honoring the symbols of French numismatics for three years and reinterpreting them through the codes of contemporary numismatics. After paying tribute to the franc of Napoleon III and Louis d'Or, Monnaie de Paris presents the latest part of this collection dedicated to the franc à cheval.

This iconic coin, which is a reinterpretation of the historical franc à cheval, is based on the gold nominal value issued in December 1360 for King John II, known as "le Bon". This coin, depicting the monarch on horseback rushing into battle, was minted to celebrate the liberation of the monarch, who was captured by the English during the Hundred Years' War, hence the name "Franc", meaning "Free".

The clovers originally depicted on the reverse of the historical coin have been modernized to stand alongside the monarch. These decorative elements, accompanied by plant crosses, evoke the emerging Gothic style.

The reverse side of this new collection pays homage to the three eras to which the three inspirations of this trilogy belong. These three graphic friezes, set in a hexagon, interpret the French flag in its heraldic form. The composition of the reverse is completed by the nominal value, the initials RF, and hallmark marks.
