Ján Andrej Segner (4. 10. 1704 – 5. 10. 1777), a native of Bratislava, was a doctor, physicist, mathematician, educator, and inventor, and is considered one of the prominent figures in science and technology of the 18th century. He became famous for inventing the so-called Segner's wheel, which rotates by the reactive force of water spraying from bent pipes. The wheel was perfected by his contemporary Leonard Euler. The discovery led to the construction of water turbines and later rockets. Segner's works on the shape of a water droplet under the influence of forces in the airspace, his treatise on concave and convex surface areas of liquids and the forces acting on them, as well as his insights into optics and astronomy, are remarkable. He was a successful educator at universities in Jena, Göttingen, and Halle. His textbooks on physics and mathematics were among the most sought-after and were published in several editions.
Obverse side:
On the obverse side of the coin, in the center of the coin field, a significant invention by Segner – Segner's wheel – is depicted within a rectangular frame. The name of the state SLOVAK REPUBLIC is inscribed along the upper edge of the coin, divided by the state emblem, below which is the year of minting 2004. At the bottom edge of the coin is the nominal value of 200 Sk. The stylized initials of the designer Mária Poldaufová are on the right, and the mint mark is on the left at the bottom edge of the frame.
Reverse side:
On the reverse side of the coin, in the center of the coin field, a portrait of Ján Andrej Segner is depicted within a circle. Around the circle, in the upper part, are seven drawings representing the development of the construction of Segner's wheel, and in the lower part, his name and surname JÁN ANDREJ SEGNER are inscribed. At the left edge of the coin is the year of his birth 1704, and at the right, the year of his death 1777.
