Jozef Maximilián Petzval (6. 1. 1807 – 17. 9. 1891) – physicist, mathematician, university professor, inventor, pioneer of modern optics and photography, is one of the prominent figures in science and technology of the 19th century.
In his scientific and research work, he focused mainly on optics. His main contribution was the calculation of the correction of optical systems and the calculation of compound optical systems. In 1840, he calculated the parameters of a new, significantly improved portrait lens and later the parameters of a landscape lens. These inventions significantly expanded the possibilities of photography. He improved the microscope and telescope and constructed a projection lens with high luminosity. He contributed to the development of acoustics, created the theory of vibrations of stretched strings, and also dealt with analytical mechanics, particularly issues of stability of bridges, cable cars, and high-rise buildings. He is the author of a work on differential equations, many professional studies, and articles. He was a member of the academy in Vienna and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Obverse:
On the obverse of the coin, in the center of the coin field, is depicted a daguerreotype device with a lens made according to Petzval's calculations, and in the background, a scheme of the optical system of the lens. The name of the state SLOVAK REPUBLIC is inscribed along the upper edge of the coin, and the year of minting 2007 is at the bottom right edge. To the right of the tripod of the photographic device is the state emblem, and to the left is the nominal value of the coin 200 Sk. The mark of the Kremnica Mint and the stylized initials of the designer of the artistic design, Karol Ličko, are placed above the year of minting.
Reverse:
On the reverse of the coin is depicted a portrait of Jozef Maximilián Petzval with a part of the lens scheme, in which a mathematical formula is placed. Along the upper edge of the coin are the names and surname JOZEF MAXIMILIÁN PETZVAL, and along the bottom edge are the years of his birth and death 1807 – 1891.
