The commemorative half-dollar coin of George Washington from 1982 marked the beginning of the era of modern commemorative coins. The coin was issued on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of George Washington's birth. Its author is Elizabeth Jones, who at the time of the coin's issuance held the position of chief sculptor and engraver at the United States Mint.

The coins were minted from 90-percent silver and were the first coins with such silver content that the United States Mint produced since 1964. They were issued in two versions: in top quality (so-called proof) and in regular quality (so-called uncirculated). Proof quality coins were minted at the San Francisco mint, while regular quality coins came from the Denver mint. The law set the maximum allowed mintage at 10 million pieces. Initially, the coins were sold at a discounted price during the "pre-sale" period, before the introduction of standard prices.

Unlike most later modern commemorative coins, the half-dollars with George Washington were produced with the assumption of sales during the years 1982 and 1983, although all coins bore the year 1982. When the United States Mint definitively stopped accepting orders on December 31, 1985, more than a million unsold coins were melted down. Nevertheless, the program generated a profit of over 36 million dollars, which was transferred to the Treasury General Fund.
