Specification
The Tatra National Park (TANAP) is located in the northern part of Slovakia on the border with Poland and, together with the neighboring Polish national park, forms a bilateral protected area. It was declared in 1949, and its establishment was the result of long-term efforts to protect unique natural values, rare preserved mountain and high-mountain ecosystems with unique species of plants and animals, from expanding economic and tourist use. TANAP covers an area of almost 76 thousand hectares and includes the High Tatras, Belianske Tatras, and Western Tatras.
The High Tatras are the highest mountain range in Slovakia and the entire Carpathian arc. Their main ridge measures only 26 km. They are among the smallest yet most beautiful high mountains in the world. On a small area, they concentrate a wealth of natural beauty - massive mountain peaks, glacial valleys, lakes, waterfalls, a diverse palette of plants and animals. Their highest peak is Gerlachovský štít (2655 m above sea level).
Obverse:
On the obverse of the coin, a Tatra chamois with a young one and the flowers of the alpine edelweiss are depicted on a rock wall. In the lower part of the coin is the state emblem and the name of the state SLOVAK REPUBLIC, the initials of the author of the artistic design Ing. Milan Virčík, and the mark of the Kremnica Mint.
Reverse:
On the reverse of the coin, in the upper half, a part of the characteristic high-mountain massif of the High Tatras and the nominal value of the coin are depicted. Below the massif are depicted the Clusius gentian flowers, the name of the national park TATRANSKÝ NÁRODNÝ PARK, and the years 1949 and 1999, indicating the year of TANAP's declaration and the fiftieth anniversary of its declaration.
