Mojmír II., the elder of the two sons of the Great Moravian ruler Svätopluk I, was born after 871 and became the Great Moravian prince after his father's death in 894. The young ruler could not maintain the vast empire and gradually lost several territories. In 896, the Hungarians settled as allies in the Great Moravian Potisí. The country was damaged by disputes between Mojmír and his brother Svätopluk II, who was supported by the Bavarians. The military confrontation ended in 899 with Mojmír's victory, but it contributed to his military weakening. A success was the arrival of papal legates who consecrated a new Moravian archbishop and three bishops. The independent ecclesiastical jurisdiction supported the ruler. After the arrival of more Hungarians in Potisia, their alliance with the Moravians ended, and in 900 they attacked Great Moravia. Mojmír abandoned disputes with the Bavarians and in 901 concluded an anti-Hungarian alliance with them. However, a strong Hungarian attack in 906 disrupted the Great Moravian state. It is likely that Mojmír II., the last Great Moravian ruler, died defending the country around 906.
