During the reign of King Matthias I Corvinus (1458 – 1490), the monarch's coat of arms on the obverse of medieval Hungarian gold florins was replaced with an image of the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus, to express that the monarch's power came from the protection of the Virgin Mary. The first known mention of these gold florins with the Virgin Mary dates back to 1471. This motif and the inscription PATRONA HVNGARIE (patroness of Hungary) have been found on Hungarian coins for centuries. This replica of the gold florin coin is an exact copy of the historical coin from the time of King Matthias I, with the reverse rotated almost 90 degrees from the obverse.
