Móric Beňovský (1746 – 1786) was a Hungarian nobleman of Slovak origin, a traveler, explorer, and soldier who influenced the history of several countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa or North America. His life combined courage, a restless spirit, and the vision of a personality who believed in progress and human dignity. He was born on September 20, 1746, in Vrbové. He studied at the lyceum in Svätý Jur, where he is registered as a Slovak nobleman. At the age of 27, he came to Madagascar in the service of the French king. In Antongil Bay, he founded the settlement of Louisbourg, was to map the local land, and build roads. Allegedly, he united local tribes, supported trade, and improved the lives of the population. According to his records, an assembly of tribal kings elected him as their leader, the great king – ampansakabé, in October 1776. Louis XVI appointed him a general, and Maria Theresa granted him the title of count. He left a literary testimony in the work Memoirs and Travels, which was published in 1790 in London and became known worldwide.
