Specification
Pavol Jozef Šafárik (13.5.1795 Kobeliarov - 26.5.1861 Prague), writer, literary historian, linguist, and ethnographer was a leading figure in Slovak and Czech science during the period of national revival. He served as director and professor at the Serbian gymnasium in Novi Sad, later as an editor in Prague. From 1848, he was the director of the university library and an extraordinary professor of Slavic philology at the Prague university. The result of his intensive study and research of Old Slavic culture and the history of Slavic nations is the extensive work History of Slavic Speech and Literature of All Dialects, works On the Origin of the Slavs, Slavic Antiquities, and Slavic Ethnography. In these works, he fought against the condescending attitude towards Slavs in foreign scholarly works, informing about the rich history, culture, literature, and languages of Slavic nations.

Obverse side:
In the center of the coin field is depicted the state emblem of the Slovak Republic, around which the inscription "SLOVAK REPUBLIC" forms a square shape. At the bottom edge is the year of minting.

Reverse side:
In the coin field, the portrait of Pavol Jozef Šafárik is centrally placed, around which is a square composition inscription formed by the name and surname of the portrayed and the nominal value. To the left of the portrait are the birth and death dates of P.J. Šafárik.
