As part of the commemorative program, which included three coins, a silver dollar featuring the bald eagle was issued in 2008 to commemorate the restoration of this species and the 35th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act. Other coins in the program included a 5-dollar gold coin and a half-dollar coin plated with copper and nickel.

The silver dollar featuring the bald eagle was minted in Philadelphia in proof and uncirculated versions. The coins were sold individually or as part of several specially issued sets. The proof version of the silver dollar was part of a commemorative set of 3 coins featuring the bald eagle, which also included proof versions of the 5-dollar gold and half-dollar coins. The uncirculated version of the silver dollar was part of a set of coins and medals, which included a bronze medal from the series of medals for the centenary of the National Wildlife Refuge System. Later that same year, the proof silver dollar was also included in the American Legacy Collection 2008.
